Lives and works in Melbourne, Australia

Jin-Ah Jo is an emerging artist who moved from South Korea to Australia to study contemporary jewellery in Australia.  During 2003-2004, Jo completed a Bachelor of Applied Arts in Metals & Jewellery Design and a Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours) Metals & Jewellery Design,  Monash University. In 2006, Jo studied at Fachhochschule Dusseldorf and during 2008 completed a Master of Fine Art, Metal and Jewellery, Monash University.

Jo has won awards for excellence in metals and jewellery at Monash University and has been a studio assistant to Susan Cohn and Marian Hosking.  Jo has participated in a number of group and solo exhibitions in Melbourne, Adelaide and Canberra.

The work currently on display was developed for the exhibition Moved at the MIgration Museum, as part of the Inside Out Exhibition of the Jewellery and Metalsmiths Conference, 2008, in Adelaide. The work portrays Jo's exploration of form, its relationship to the human body and the concept of wearability.

Jo comments, 'my first visual language is Korean which is very geometric and the process of geometric expression is sometimes harmonious or contradictory.  Harmonious aspects include concepts like construction, symmetry, arrangement or refinement.  Contradictory aspects incorporates ideas of deconstruction, asymmetry, confusions or disorder which may appear unconventional in terms of jewellery design'.

Jo explores function over form and the use of a range of materials including acrylic tubes, nylon and magnets as well as metals. This principle of 'function creating form' encourages deconstruction and highlights the unique characteristics of the material.

Jin-Ah Jo is currently collaborating with Al on a cross-cultural project exploring Australian and Korea through language, form and metal.
