Canberra-based artist Demelza Sherwood has an unerring eye for the overlooked. Her notebooks are filled with drawings of everyday moments: a line of trees in a park or a woman exercising her dog - and yet she notices details that bring these vignettes to life - the striped socks on the dog-walker, the child's balloon caught in the branches.
Using drawing and collage, Sherwood creates whimsical stories based on these observations, layering her imagery with colours and patterns sourced from her collection of vintage fabric and stationery.
Her most recent works include hand-stitched portraits of family, friends and strangers. This series of drawings is based on family snapshots and found photographs.
Sherwood completed a Bachelor of Visual Arts with First Class Honours from the Print Media and Drawing Workshop, School of Art, Australian National University in 2004.
