Andrew Blake is a well known sculptor who co-ordinates the Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Art Centre at Yirrkala. He is inspired by the beauty of the Australia's fauna, in particular the flowers and stems located in north east Arnhemland, which he connects with the experience of human relationships and what he has learnt from the Yolngu people and their elders.
Blake works with iron wood that grows in the Arnhemland region and as a hard wood it is difficult and challenging, requiring a high degree of force and skill to carve. As an sculptor, he is able to read the wood and produce works of great beauty and emotion which reflect on the human condition.
